Global Shipping Realigns as Ships Return to the Suez Canal
22-04-2025

The global shipping industry is witnessing a shift as 47 vessels have rerouted from the Cape of Good Hope back to the Suez Canal since early February. This comes after months of disruption caused by Houthi militant attacks in the Red Sea, which forced ships to take the longer African route. According to Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority Chairman, Osama Rabie, the crisis has not established a sustainable alternative to the canal, with positive signs of stability emerging in the region.

The Red Sea crisis, which began in November 2023, significantly impacted global trade and logistics, leading to higher shipping costs and delays. Vessels navigating through Africa faced increased fuel consumption and extended transit times. However, the gradual return of shipping to the Suez Canal indicates a recovery phase, benefiting international trade and supply chain networks that depend on this vital passage for faster transit between Asia and Europe.

Egypt has faced financial setbacks due to this crisis, with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reporting an estimated $7 billion loss in Suez Canal revenue for 2024. The resumption of traffic through the canal is a positive sign for the global logistics industry, reducing shipping costs and transit times. As Exim Transtrade continues to adapt to evolving trade routes, we remain committed to optimizing logistics solutions for seamless global supply chain operations.
